Colombia Reach World Cup Round of 16 with Narrow Victory Over Ghana

New Delhi: An early goal from Jhon Arias guided Colombia to a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Ghana in Kansas City on Saturday, securing the South American side a place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16.

Colombia, who remained unbeaten during the group stage, continued their impressive run with another disciplined performance. The victory sets up a knockout-stage clash against Switzerland as the Colombians look to advance deeper into the tournament.

Ghana started brightly and nearly stunned Colombia within the opening minutes. Midfielder Thomas Partey unleashed a powerful long-range effort in the second minute, but the shot narrowly missed the target.

Colombia gradually settled into the contest and found the breakthrough in the 14th minute. Luis Suárez, starting in place of the injured Jhon Córdoba, delivered a precise pass from the right flank into the penalty area. Arias reacted quickly and calmly finished past the goalkeeper to give Colombia a 1-0 lead.

The South Americans continued to control possession and create opportunities. Just before halftime, winger Luis Díaz came close to doubling the advantage but failed to convert from inside the box, allowing Ghana to remain within striking distance.

Díaz thought he had extended Colombia’s lead in the 56th minute when he fired a powerful shot into the net. However, the celebrations were cut short after the assistant referee ruled him offside, and the goal was disallowed.

Despite Ghana’s efforts to find an equalizer, Colombia maintained their defensive discipline and protected their slender advantage until the final whistle. The win also continued a notable trend for Colombia, who have scored the opening goal in three of their four matches at this World Cup.

Queiroz Admits Colombia Were the Better Side

Ghana head coach Carlos Queiroz acknowledged Colombia’s superiority after the match and praised his opponents for their control of the game.

“Colombia managed the match better than we did. Their players moved the ball well, maintained possession, and consistently put pressure on our goal. We had moments when we played with great determination and tried to break through their defense, but we lacked the finishing touch when it mattered most. To be honest, the better team won,” Queiroz said.

With confidence growing and an unbeaten record intact, Colombia now turn their attention to Switzerland in the Round of 16, aiming to continue their impressive World Cup campaign.
